Grayson County with its cool summer breezes has been a favorite vacation spot for the Lassiter Family for over 30 years. Living in the tidewater region of Virginia with its hot, humid summers caused the Lassiters to seek cooler respite for their two week vacation each year. They had extended family move to Grayson and on a visit in the late 1960s they found the fresh air, lush greenery, and cool nights refreshing. In the early 1970s Clara and Dickie Lassiter purchased 17+ acres in the Bethel community of Elk Creek, Virginia. They enjoyed many years relaxing, hiking, and creating their vacation home. In the 1990s the Lassiters added the current Guest House. They gardened, took day trips to local festivals, picked local berries, floated on the New River, and gazed at the night skies. They entertained visitors with picnics, horseshoes or croquet, and late night card games. They enjoyed fall visits as the leaves changed to golden and orange hues. Clara and Dickie loved winter visits. It was always fun to wait for the snows and enjoy the beauty the quiet, white scenes provide. The love for their mountain home was passed on to their children and grandchild and although Clara and Dickie are no longer with us, their love for Lassiter’s Mountain Refuge remains. As others visit, it is our family’s hope that the precious memories we hold will be passed on to them.
