Using the Spam Filtering System
The new spam filtering system is highly effective - once it is trained. Most of the email users who have utilized the system for a few weeks have noticed a radical drop off in spam. The average user has gone from receiving several hundred spams a week to none since training their filters. You'll soon get the same results after reviewing the instructions below (there's also an online overview, available at http://tutor.pronetsinc.com/Dspam.htm).
Three Ways to Train Your Spam Filter (choose one):
1. Forward
You can train the spam filters directly from your Inbox by forwarding any spam you receive to spam-username@yourdomain.com - for example, spam-bob@wiredog.com. You still need to go to http://spam.pronetsinc.com every few days and check your quarantine; just to be sure you're not missing legitimate mail.
2. Junk Folder
Webmail users can just move spam messages to your Junk email folder and the system will be trained. The Junk folder should be created by clicking "Folders" and "Create Junk Folder" within webmail.
3. Interface
To train your filters using the Dspam interface, go to http://spam.pronetsinc.com and log in with your email address and password. To retrain the filters for spam that has already made it into your inbox, go to the History tab.
If you see a message that was obviously spam and it has a green "Good" box beside it, you need to retrain it as spam by clicking the check box to the left of that message and click the "Retrain Checked" box at the top - that will let the spam filtering system know that those messages are spam and won't let them through again.
If you see legitimate messages marked in your history as "Spam" and you need those messages to make it through in the future, select them and click "Retrain Checked" so the system will recognize those senders as "Innocent" or legitimate and will allow their emails in the future.
The quarantine tab will show messages that the system believes is SPAM. If you see a message in there that is good, just click the check box and click "Deliver Checked." This will simultaneously send you that message and alert the filter that the message is good and allow mail from that sender in the future. Also, if you have spam in the quarantine, all you have to do is delete it, and the filters will know in the future that those messages are spam and it won't allow them through. Be careful when deleting mail from the quarantine, however, as those messages will be gone forever.
The serial # at the bottom of each message is normal and is necessary for the filters to learn from your email. The serial number is the code at the bottom of all email messages, ie. DSPAM:45d0bc93199651804284693.
Turning off the filters:
Go to http://spam.pronetsinc.com and log in with your email address and password. Click the preferences tab and click the dot to the immediate left of "Assume Good (Fewer in Quarantine)" so that the quarantining is off. Click Submit Changes. Warning: this will result in more Spam in your inbox. We do not assume responsibility for increased spam traffic if your filters are turned off.
